Tanjong Pagar (Jawi script: تنجوڠڤاڬر) means "cape of stake" in Malay. This may be due to the coastal Keron (offshore fish trap made of wooden stakes and crosspieces) from Tanjong Malang Village to Tanjong Pagar. In George Drum Gour Coleman's 1836 city plan, there is a road from Southbridge Road to Fisherman's Village, Tanjong Pagar, which could be Tanjong Pagar's corruption. According to Murray Anal, swordfish herds were constantly attacking Singapore's coastal villages. With the advice of the boy Hangnadim, Surimaharaja built a banana stalk defense structure on the coast of the village and caught the swordfish when he attacked the village.
